What Is Substance Abuse?

At Omega Recovery, we offer our clients the latest in addiction treatment through our community integrated treatment program. Traditional substance abuse treatment centers put the struggling individual in an artificial treatment bubble where its relatively easy to stay sober, but inevitably when that client leaves treatment, they are unprepared to deal with the stress of everyday life. In this “community integration” model the clients get to experience life; shopping in the supermarket, going on a barbeque, going to a doctors appointment, going on a job interview, all with staff supervision and clinical staff that can help process any and all the feelings and emotions that can so often arise in early recovery.

We view addiction as a self-medicating symptom of some other underlying distress. That underlying distress can be different in each person: childhood trauma, psychiatric imbalance, physical pain, toxic relationships, existential crisis, personality disorders, unresolved bereavement, internalized shame, etc. For each person, those issues can come together to form a unique “perfect storm” of active addiction. But meaningful recovery is not just detoxing the person from the substances or the addictive behavior; it’s understanding and then treating the issues that led to the self-medication and also helping the struggling addict develop a better sense of Self–and to develop the tools to live life in a more healthy and meaningful way.

Alcohol Addiction

According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism 26% of people, ages 18 or older reported that they engaged in binge drinking in the past month; 7% reported that they engaged in heavy alcohol use in the past month. Additionally, an estimated 88,000 people die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol the third leading preventable cause of death in the united states. At Omega Recovery, we aim to ensure long term sobriety with proven evidence-based methods.

Heroin and Opiates Addiction

Heroin and opiates are highly addictive and are becoming more and more accessible. Each day in the United States more than 130 individuals die from opioid overdoses. Omega Recovery understands the discomfort associated with opioid withdrawal and the unique challenges that come with attempting to stay clean. We provide struggling opiate addicts with the tools and resources needed to break free from the addictive cycle.

Amphetamines Addiction

Recently, amphetamine addiction has become a major issue facing individuals across the nation. Prescriptions stimulants like Adderall and Dexedrine, along with illicit amphetamines like methamphetamine and ecstasy, are highly addictive and disruptive when used as recreational drugs. It is estimated that over 5% of individuals over the age of 12 will use meth at some point in their life and 4.8 million people abused prescription amphetamine medications. Omega Recovery’s understands the challenges of treating amphetamine addiction due to the changes in brain structure that occur with chronic use. Our program uses multiple therapies that help people understand and adjust their behaviors to stay on the path to recovery.

Marijuana Addiction

When people attempt to stop using Marijuana, they can experience irritability and restlessness. They can develop deep cravings for marijuana that can interrupt their sleep, their work, and their hobbies. Many marijuana advocates would have people believe that this is a drug that’s harmless and safe. The National Institute on Drug Abuse suggests that about 9 percent of people who abuse marijuana will develop an addiction to the drug in time. That risk rises to 17 percent if users start a marijuana habit during the teen years, and it rises to 25-50 percent in those who use the drug every day.

Omega Recovery’s Chief Clinical Officer
Dr. Nicholas Kardaras, explains in his book “Glow Kids” how modern-day technology is equally if not more dopaminergic(addictive) than drugs and alcohol. Considered a leading expert in digital addiction, he has clinically worked with 1,000 individuals and written about the subject for Time, Scientific American, Psychology Today, Solan, and FOX News, and has appeared on Good Morning America, ABC’s 20/20, the CBS Evening News, CNN, FOX & Friends, NPR, and in Esquire, New York magazine, and Vanity Fair.

    Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol-related causes are the third greatest preventable cause of mortality in the United States. Alcohol addiction does not discriminate against what it causes havoc too. It will intertwine itself into the person’s home, school, work, and all relationships.

    Opioid Addiction

Opioids have a high potential for causing addiction in some people, even when prescribed appropriately and taken as directed. Many prescription opioids are misused or diverted to others.

    Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine releases dopamine which causes a sense of pleasure and euphoria in the brain. This constant cycle of “feel good” emotions promotes the individual to use the drug repeatedly and as they develop a tolerance for the drug.

    Amphetamine (Meth) Addiction

Amphetamines are categorized as stimulants and addiction can leave the individual and their families feeling frightened while they are stuck in an endless cycle of bingeing and crashing.

    Marijuana Addiction

The unfortunate truth is that the lack of serious, early consequences to marijuana addiction allows for a long, slow decline, often without recognition, resulting in later-stage addiction before the problem is confronted.

    Club Drugs Addiction

Young adults commonly use club drugs at public venues such as concerts, nightclubs, and bars. However, many people may not realize what drugs are considered a “club drug” because of the ever-changing nicknames.

Omega Recovery’s Substance Abuse Treatment Program

Clients are transported to clinical programming every weekday to participate in a vast array of treatment modalities that have been proven to be effective in treating substance abuse and mental health issues. During a typical week in programming clients will participate in motivational interviewing (MI), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), mindfulness meditation, relapse prevention, breathwork, and psychodrama. They will also have opportunities to participate in body movement therapies such as yoga, karate, and Qi Gong. Omega Recovery also utilizes the beautiful landscapes and parks of Austin, Texas for nature immersion groups and therapeutic excursions, such as rock climbing, ropes courses, kayaking, and hiking. Afternoons are spent at the Townlake YMCA participating in Active Recovery Coaching.

The housing component of Omega Recovery’s treatment program is supported by a 24/7 staffed living environment. The living environments are gender-specific, meaning men and women are housed separately. Clients will have the opportunity to learn or relearn how to perform everyday tasks such as making dinner, doing chores, financial planning, and preparing for job interviews. They will be a part of a tight-knit community and will be encouraged to offer support to their housemates along their journey. They will be transported every evening to a peer-based recovery meeting in the community such as 12 step meetings, SMART recovery, or Refuge recovery. Any client struggling with mental health issues will have the opportunity to participate in some alternative recovery programs and will not be required to identify as an addict or alcoholic.
