Does Your Family Need Help During this Teenage Mental Health Crisis?

These are perhaps the most challenging times to be raising a teenager. We’re in the midst of a mental health pandemic with record levels of teenage anxiety, depression, ADHD, self-harm and other serious psychiatric disorders. There have been dozens of studies that have correlated this rise in psychiatric distress among young people with our love affair and infatuation with our screen devices and our social media obsession. In fact, the Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy warned in a report published in 2023 that that young people who engage in “more than 3 hours per day on social media faced double the risk of experiencing poor mental health outcomes including symptoms of depression and anxiety.”
The statistics are heartbreaking: One in seven teenagers experience a mental health disorder, and three-quarters of teens seventeen and under have depression and anxiety. Nearly half of teens also have behavioral problems and one in three teenage girls have seriously considered suicide. It’s no wonder the nation’s leading pediatric groups declared a national emergency in children’s mental health in 2021.

Omega Recovery’s Founder Dr. Nicholas Kardaras participated in the forthcoming documentary “Doomscroll” that highlights some of the harmful cognitive and emotional and impacts of screen time on teenagers.

If you’re a parent navigating these turbulent years, you need to know that there is help.

At Omega Recovery, we offer the most effective evidence-based treatment for teens struggling with their mental health, screen overuse, and/or substance use that’s provided by compassionate masters-level therapists experienced in treating teenage distress, all in a discreet and comfortable setting in our South Austin clinical offices.
Now more than ever, teens and families need support, community, and comprehensive care. Most of all, they need hope. Omega recovery’s teen outpatient program ends isolation, helps adolescents build a sense of meaning and purpose, and treats issues that can increase the risk of self-harm if not addressed.

What is an Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured and comprehensive therapeutic treatment model designed to cater specifically to adolescents who are facing mental health challenges, substance use issues, problematic screen usage, and/or co-occurring disorders. Our IOP program is three days per week (Mon, Wed, Thurs from 5:30pm to 8:30pm).

Our Philosophy

We see love, connection and belonging as the strongest motivator of change. We heavily emphasize group interactions because we want to see teens connecting, interacting and building healthy and strong relationships with each other, as well as with our talented, well-qualified staff, and their families.

First and foremost, we help teens establish a healthy, balanced and sustainable relationship with digital media while addressing underlying issues which keep them stuck. Ultimately, we strengthen the entire family system, not just the person distracted by screen use.

Omega Recovery’s Adolescent IOP Program

Our program serves teens from 13-to-17 and their families at both an intensive outpatient (IOP) and outpatient (OP) levels of care. The program provides a well-rounded treatment experience for adolescents to work towards the continued development of healthy independence and self-awareness while fostering healthy communication and healing within the family. IOP and OP programming for this age group occurs in the late afternoons/early evenings to ensure clients who are still in high school can maintain their educational and extracurricular commitments. We work closely with parents, school staff and outside providers to ensure effective coordination towards the adolescents’ goals.
Participants attend regular individual therapy sessions, group counseling, engage in experiential activities and educational workshops while still maintaining their daily routines and commitments. Our program often includes a combination of evidence-based therapies, psychoeducation, family involvement, and holistic approaches to promote overall well-being.

The program relies heavily on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) techniques, focusing on coping skills, distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, family involvement, and education on the link between mental health, screen time and substance abuse.

Since these issues affect the entire family, our program is designed to involve parents and legal guardians in the therapeutic process by asking them to participate once a week during our 12-week program. In addition, our therapists use Dr. Nicholas Kardaras’s 12 week “Hero’s Journey” treatment model, specifically designed to treat teenage distress. Dr. Kardaras is Omega Recovery’s Founder and a nationally recognized thought leader and clinical expert in treating teens and their mental health and screen overuse issues.
